  • What Is Amigurumi?

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small stuffed toys or as we like to call them, Plushies. Unlike traditional crochet, amigurumi focuses on creating three-dimensional shapes with defined features, often resulting in an adorable animal or character. (Plushie) The art is in the simplicity of amigurumi, and —if you can dream it, you can create it with enough practice and determination!

    Essential Supplies for Amigurumi

Before you start, you'll need a few basic supplies:

    Yarn –

Choose a medium-weight yarn, like cotton or acrylic, as they’re easiest to work with and give good stitch definition. I like this yarn from amazon because it gives you a sample of many colors and being acrylic, it has that soft plush feel, not to mention the cost is reasonable and for me having it delivered is a must have bonus! Crochet Hook –

A smaller hook than the yarn calls for is best for creating tight stitches, so the stuffing doesn’t show through. If you really want to show off your new hobby, pick up a custom beaded crochet hook with your favorite character or theme in our shop that can inspire you while create.  CLICK HERE  to check them out now! Here is one of my favorites to preview.

    Stuffing –

Use polyester fiberfill for a soft, squishy finish (plushie like finish)! You can find a great selection on Amazon and I have included the link to this Butueze Polyester Premium Fiber Fill 8.8 oz size that is a great value and has a soft touch to make your first plushie a cuddle time favorite.

    Stitch Markers –

Essential for keeping track of rounds, especially in amigurumi. Without this essential tool you would literally be lost! Visit our shop and pick up a few before you get started.  We offer unique markers to inspire you as you crochet! Here are few to preview and I’ve included the link so that you can purchase your own custom stitch marker. CLICK HERE!

Scissors, Tapestry Needle, and Safety Eyes –

Additional tools for finishing touches. There are so many options when it comes to these basic materials and it will essentially be a personal choice. You can get anything form the basic safety eyes to glitter safety eyes, so again its your preference.

    5 Tips for Amigurumi Beginners

    1. Start with Simple Shapes

If this is your first project, start with simple shapes like spheres or cylinders. Many amigurumi patterns begin with these shapes, and mastering them will make complex projects easier down the line.

    1. Use the Right Hook Size

A smaller hook than recommended for your yarn ensures your stitches are tight, which is essential for amigurumi. Loose stitches may lead to visible gaps where stuffing can escape, so experiment with hooks until you find a size that produces a snug fabric. And don't forget to check out our Beaded Crochet hooks. Just the right size and great for both comfort and style!

    1. Master the Magic Ring

The magic ring (or magic circle) is a technique for starting projects in the round and is essential for amigurumi. It allows you to pull the starting stitches tight, eliminating gaps. Take the time to practice the magic ring, as it’ll be your go-to starting technique.

    1. Count Your Stitches and Use Stitch Markers

Since amigurumi projects are worked in continuous rounds, it’s crucial to keep track of your stitch count. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to avoid losing your place, especially as patterns often require increasing and decreasing stitches. Be unique and pick up a custom stitch marker in our shop.  Click Here!

    1. Stuff Firmly but Evenly

How much you stuff affects the look and feel of your amigurumi. Add stuffing gradually, pushing it firmly into all parts without overstretching the stitches. You want a plush, even shape—too much stuffing can distort it, while too little may lead to a floppy finish.

    Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

    Skipping Stitches –

Missing stitches or failing to count accurately can lead to uneven shapes.

    Visible Seams and Gaps –

Prevent these by keeping stitches tight and practicing the magic ring for smooth rounds.

    Overstuffing –

Avoid the temptation to overstuff, as it stretches the fabric, distorting your design.

    Practice, Practice,  Practice

Amigurumi is a skill that improves with practice. The more you crochet, the better you’ll get at keeping your stitches even, shaping your creations, and adding character to your plushies. Don’t worry if your first project doesn’t look perfect—it’s all part of the learning process! Take your time and and pace yourself. Rushing to finish will only create disappointment, and I want you to love your new found hobby.
